๐Ÿชถ For the strictest upload limits

Compress an image to under 5KB

A handful of government and university portals cap uploads at just 5KB โ€” usually for a scanned signature rather than a photograph. This tool squeezes your file down to that limit while keeping the image as legible as possible.

When you actually need a 5KB file

5KB is an unusually tight limit, and in practice it almost always shows up for signature uploads on older government portals, court e-filing systems, or scholarship application forms rather than for photographs โ€” a photo compressed this hard will lose a lot of detail. If a form is asking for a 5KB photo, it's worth double-checking the instructions in case it actually means 5KB for the signature and a separate, larger limit for the photo.

The tool works by repeatedly re-encoding your image at a lower JPEG quality, and if quality alone can't get under 5KB, it also shrinks the pixel dimensions in small steps until the file fits.

โ“ Frequently asked questions

Why does my compressed image look blurry?

At 5KB there isn't much data to work with, so the tool reduces both quality and pixel size to fit the limit. For a signature (mostly white space with thin dark lines), this usually still looks clean. For a full photo, some softness is expected.

Will this work for a scanned signature?

Yes โ€” signatures compress very well because most of the image is a plain background, so more of the 5KB budget goes toward the actual ink strokes.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. The compression happens with your browser's built-in canvas tools, so the file never leaves your device.
