Best results: plain, even-coloured backgroundBeing upfront about how this works
This tool doesn't use AI subject detection β it samples the colour in the photo's top-left corner and makes similar-coloured pixels transparent, which works well for a photo taken against a plain, evenly lit background (like a passport-style photo) but won't cleanly separate a subject from a busy or textured background. If the edges look rough, try adjusting the sensitivity slider, or retake the photo against a plainer backdrop for a cleaner result.
How to use Remove Image Background
- Upload the photo you want to edit.
- Adjust any sliders, colours, or options shown above the upload box β the preview updates as you go.
- Compare the before and after side by side.
- Download the edited photo once it looks the way you want.
Tips for best results
- Try a few different settings before downloading β most sliders here update the preview instantly, so it's quick to compare options.
- Work from your best-quality original; effects applied on top of an already-compressed photo tend to look rougher.
- If you're combining this with another tool (like compressing afterwards), apply this effect first, then compress last.
β Frequently asked questions
Can I apply this more than once to stack the effect?
Yes β download the result and re-upload it to apply the effect again, though stacking some effects can look over-processed quickly.
Does this work on PNG images with transparency?
Transparent areas are generally preserved unless the tool specifically converts to JPG, which fills transparency with white.
Why didn't this fully remove my background?
This tool works by detecting a plain, uniform background colour β a busy, textured, or unevenly lit background won't separate cleanly. It works best on plain-backdrop photos like ID or passport-style shots.
What does the sensitivity slider do?
A higher value removes a wider range of similar colours (useful for slightly uneven lighting), but too high can start removing parts of your subject if its colours are close to the background.
Can I then put a solid colour behind my subject?
Yes β after downloading the transparent PNG, our passport photo tool and colour-background tools can composite it onto a new solid background.
